Frequently Asked Questions from the First Night of Practice

Wow, what a turn out huh?  The first week of each season tends to be pretty crazy but it will settle down.

We fielded a bunch of questions last night, thought everyone might like to hear some of the answers.

1. Yowzers, the team looks huge this year!  How many swimmers signed up?
As of this morning, we are at 140 swimmers.  We have another dozen or so checking us out this week to see if they want to join.  Last year we had 128 swimmers.

2. And it looks like there are lots of new swimmers?
We don’t have official counts, but it looked like about 54 swimmers attended New Swimmer Evaluation.  (Some were returning swimmers who were just eager to get in the pool.)  For the first time, we have Varsity Girls swim team members continue training past their regular season with us.  Actually, the majority of the Northview Varsity Freshman Girls are now on NCST.

We’re very excited about the team.  It’s great to see the program grow with new swimmers coming on board and returning swimmers coming back.

3. When will the Early Bird Swim Caps be in?
We ordered them as soon as possible after the cut off.  The vendor estimated around Thanksgiving, but was very busy with High School teams conferences and finals.  We’re hoping soon.  If your swimmer wants a generic Northview swim cap, we have them in the pool office for $5. (cash only.)

4. Practice four days a week?
Yes, NCST offers practices Monday through Thursday.  The more time your swimmer spends in the water, the faster he or she will get.  We know you won’t be able to make every practice.  Pay attention to the team calendar.  There are cancellations for holidays and other swim teams having meets at the pool.

New Swimmer Evaluation Details

Hey New Swimmers!

Boy are we excited to have you!  Here’s some details for Wednesday Night.

This is a drop in night.  Plan on about 15 minutes. We’ll have coaches available from 6:00 PM – about 7:15 PM.

Show up, ready to swim.  Bring a suit, towel and goggles.  Please use the girls, boys or family locker room as appropriate.

Coaches will ask the swimmer to show his or her stuff.  Don’t stress about it.  If your athlete doesn’t know a stroke, the coach may be able to offer some guidance depending on time.  We’ll be able to teach proper strokes during the season.

Your swimmer must be able to compete in the distances for his or her age group:

  1. Swimmers competing 8 & under – swim 25 yards unassisted
  2. Swimmers competing 9 & up – swim at least 50 yards unassisted

Coaches will determine which practice level is appropriate for your athlete.  Gold, Silver or Bronze.  Coaches will give you an assignment at the end of your evaluation.  Please also note, you may be asked to change practice groups during the season.

Returning NCST Swimmers are also welcome to attend if you are unsure which practice group is appropriate for your swimmer’s skill level.

One More Week to Sign Up for NCST

Alright, no witty intro for this one.  It’s time to get serious.  We gotta vote tomorrow.  We gotta deal with the outcome of that on Wednesday – whichever way it goes. This is the last week to sign up for swimming.

The good news is we can all start forgetting next Monday when practices start.  We might even be used to the time change by then.

The Run Down:

  • If you are a new swimmer, or unsure which practice group to attend, be sure to attend to New Swimmer Evaluation on 11/9.
  • Regular practices start 11/14.
  • Swimmers must be registered before 12/1/16 to receive a team shirt.
  • We are recommending the Tyr Shark Bite competition suit again for this season.  More info below.
  • Parent meeting on 11/22.
  • We’re planning on attending the Kentwood Invitational on 12/3.  This is optional and the cost is not included with your registration – more information to follow.
  • Meet schedulevolunteer forms and season calendar have been published to the website.

Did you know a fortnight means 2 weeks?  It’s the how long the Olympics are.  See, swimming can be great exercise, a fun sport and educational!

That’s right folks, practices start in 2 weeks.  November 14th.  If November had a Valentines Day, we’d  be starting practices on it.  If you haven’t signed up yet… better get on it.

2016-2017 Competition Suit

Again this year we are recommending the Tyr Shark Bite suit.  This is the same team suit as last year.

Make sure you order the red one!
This suit is available from many online retailers including (in no particular order, and I’m giving you search result links here):

Your suit should be pretty snug.  You want to be hydrodynamic (see, you just added a word to your vocabulary, I told you swimming was educational)  when you are swimming fast.

There is an invitational in early December, if you elect to participate you will want a competition suit early.

You’ll also need goggles for practice.  You may also want a different practice suit in addition to this competition suit.  Pick something fun.

Please, (PLEASE!) write your swimmer’s name in the suit.  They all look identical.  Did I say please?

If you decide not to purchase this competition suit, please have a black or red and black suit for competition.  Most swimmers will have this suit, but it is optional.
